According to recent comScore data, internet users watched 30.3 billion videos in April 2010 alone. The internet is increasingly becoming something we watch versus read; and adding video content to your website or blog is a great way to engage users. But video production doesn’t have to be expensive, or even complicated. Here’s a list of five cheap and easy ways to create video content:
- Mobile Phone
The quality might not be the greatest, but it’s right there in your pocket to capture video at a moment’s notice. Some of the most entertaining and “of the moment” videos on YouTube were shot on a mobile phone. The iPhone in particular captures very good quality video. - Webcam
If you’re not shy, an inexpensive webcam is great for informal, off-the-cuff type of productions, such as video blogging, interviews, introductions, and tutorials. Many laptops even have webcams built in, so you can webcast on the go! - Digital Camera with Video
If you purchased a digital camera in the past few years or so, there’s a good chance it also has digital video capture capability (usually with decent quality). Recording video with a digital camera is often limited by your memory card size, which only makes it ideal for short videos. For longer videos, you could break up your video into small files and then edit them together. - Screen Recording Software
There are a number of free and fee-based screen recording software solutions available online. These programs enable you to record activity as it happens on your computer screen. For example, you could record yourself giving a software demo, presenting a webinar, constructing a template-basically anything that happens on your monitor! For starters, check out CamStudio, Camtasia Studio, ScreenToaster, and FRAPS. - Windows Movie Maker
If you’re a Windows user you most likely already have this application installed. Though lacking in features, Windows Movie Maker is perhaps the easiest software to use for editing video. You can import video clips, audio clips, and pictures to create simple videos with title cards, transitions, and other basic effects.
When you’re ready to upload and share your videos, don’t forget to optimize them by adding appropriate keywords, descriptions, and tags-make sure your content will get discovered! For Screen captures, there is also Techsmith’s Jing. From the same people who make Camtasia Studio, Jing is a free recorder which allows for single shot image captures as well as 5 minutes of screen recording, but no editing capabilities. The Pro version offers more. See http://www.jingproject.com/
