Adware companies aren’t the only ones fending off lawsuits these days. The FTC ‘s recent charge against the social networking site, Xanga.com, led to a settlement where Xanga.com agreed to the largest penalty ever for allegedly violating the the Children?s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in a settlement with the FTC.
Xanga.com CEO, John Hiler, had this to say in their press release, Statement of XANGA.COM on FTC Settlement:
“Because of our commitment to making the site safer for our members, we have since instituted a stronger, more comprehensive safety and compliance program. This program incorporates the requirements set forth in the settlement the FTC announced today. But it also goes beyond mere compliance with the COPPA and other laws to include a comprehensive approach to keeping the site safer for all users.”
If you visit Xanga.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page you’ll also see that they link to OnGuardOnline.gov. That’s also part of their $1 Million settlement with the FTC.
