This week’s blog is contributed by Stacy Smith, our Media Supervisor and self-proclaimed “Power Mom!”
According to eMarketer, there are an estimated 103.2 million women online this year:
This is a busy time of year indeed for moms. (Not that any season isn’t busy when you’re a mom, but this is probably the busiest!) We are gearing up for back to school, fall sports, and still wrapping up vacations while the holiday season looms on the horizon, all while keeping close with friends and preparing meals that everyone in the house will eat. So where are we? Same places we’ve always been! We are socializing and looking for deals, easy recipes, rainy day ideas to keep the kids busy, and working hard both in and outside of the house.
Whether it be the state of the health care system, the local weather, tips on the latest trends (for ourselves as well as the kids) or back to school specials, we are flocking online to search, investigate, and devour everything in our path that we deem important to ourselves, our family or our friends. The kids typically come first, well, 9 out of 10 times anyway! So back to school is on the front burner for me and many others. Even though many have already started the school year, us Moms know that the school list you can find at your local super store only reveals the basics, and most kids will need additional items.
But despite the usual back-to-school rush, according to Mish’s Global Economic Trend Analysis, “retail professionals are predicting the worst performance for stores in more than a decade, yet another sign that consumers are clinging to every dollar.” As a mom, I want to add a little flavor to that analysis. I predict that moms will continue to buy on a weekly basis, and many of us are waiting for those specials that will surely surface after the “back-to-school specials” have ended. Honestly, I’m not buying less for my kids this year than any other, but I am being more frugal. And I don’t feel rushed to acquire their complete fall wardrobes by August 31st. My kids can start the year wearing some of the clothes that they already have, and perhaps a few new things.
So where are the Moms online? The answer: reading email, paying bills, reading news, checking the weather, searching for deals (usually on specific retail sites or coupon resources), playing games (I would include social networks here), shopping, planning trips, and researching healthcare.
As for me, I am watching my email to see what coupons come my way, and I’m reading the back-to-school banners as well as paying attention to posts on the social sites I belong to. I am watching every dollar, as well as every quarter! Most moms, like me, love a good deal. It means we can buy more!
