Will you be using Facebook from your mobile phone to send your friends a green beer today? If you’re a female between the ages of 25 - 54, there’s a good chance! With the rise of mobile social networks and over 2 billion iPhone apps downloaded, it’s no secret that mobile social networking is rapidly growing.

Let’s knock one back and dig a little deeper into mobile social networking stats:

According to a recent Nielsen study, 70% of mobile social network users are between the ages of 25 and 54, compared to 23% aged 13 - 24. Why? Popular belief is that those aged 13-24 are too busy texting their friends directly and don’t feel the need to log in to Facebook or MySpace via their mobile phone.

In the same study, Nielsen reveals that 55% of mobile social network users are female. Not surprising, right?

According to a recent ComScore MobiLens study, Facebook grew 112% while MySpace lost users.

After all, according to the latest CMB consumer pulse report, consumers are 51% more likely to buy from a brand they follow on Facebook. And, it appears as though they are more likely to follow that brand based on a Facebook friend’s recommendation.

So while you’re enjoying your virtual green beer from your favorite mobile social network, just remember…it is predicted that the two may go hand-in-hand today. Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I’m not completely sure about the efficacy of the CMB survey. I’ll have to check out there site to confirm but I can imagine how such a slight margin is simply the result of a feedback loop. People just don’t start following random brands on FaceBook and then turn around and buy that brand product, they start to follow the brands they are already familiar with. So I’ll buy the concept that it’s good brand confidence building (reinforcing) but as an advertising platform I’d disagree.

Facebook has certainly grown compared to MySpace. I think this is due to the more interactive applications and its a new generation social network. I do agree with the above comment, in my view people will follow brands they already have a relationship or connection with. Therefore, new ads need to appeal to their current audience, rather than trying to attract new. Brand loyalty is key here.

Facebook has really grown to a larger extent in a less span of time compares to myspace, facebook has really good appplications, it keeps updating the applications with new features on a regular basis.
