If you’ve used Yahoo Search today you may have noticed a slight difference in the way the search results are listed–although this may be a big difference to some. Instead of the normal 20 results there are now 10. Although this isn’t a definite and confirmed change–this may be some type of testing phase–it could mean bad news for the site previously listed at number 11 in the search results.
Before, any site that was ranked between 11 and 20 was listed on the first page. Not anymore. This could undoubtedly lead to less traffic to these sites because many people, generally novice search engine users, click on first page results more than the second, third, and so on.
A survey released by iProspect in early May 2004 and reported in SearchEngineWatch.com showed that out of 1,649 searchers, 23 percent reviewed only the first few matches listed on page one. Nineteen percent reviewed only the first page in its entirety. These are pretty significant findings and ones that could lead to many complaints for Yahoo.
Hopefully there will be more information available within the coming days. Yahoo UK still continues to list 20 results for its page one listings so we have yet to know for sure what is going on.
