Did you know that your page’s HTML “TITLE” tag is vital to your index and placement on the major search engines? How many sites do you visit that have no title whatsoever or one that says only “Welcome to XYZ site”? This simple oversight can significantly reduce your search engine visibility. Here are a few quick hints.

The first 100 characters of each page title should provide a short, detailed description of that page’s content. For your home page especially, make those title tags include your critical keywords or phrases FIRST! For example, Web Ad.vantage’s home page title is: “Creative Internet Marketing, Promotions & PR Service is your Web Ad.vantage.” Some businesses literally just have a list of keywords, which is also fine.

But don’t stop at the home page. Remember each page, assigning it with descriptive, meaningful titles. This will not only help those pages to get indexed by the search engine spiders, but it will also help readers who happen to come into your site on that page understand where they are and what they’re about to read about. Finally, those titles are what is displayed when you drag your mouse over your minimized browser icon at the bottom of your screen…no title = no reminder to reader to read your page before he/she surfs on.
