It may sound odd, asking your competitor to help market you. But let’s consider some of the advantages for a moment:

By introducing yourself to your competitor, you may be able to find areas in which you complement, rather than compete directly with each other. For those areas, you could then refer business to one another.

Competitors can also be partners if your business grows too fast and you need to outsource or resource services or products. Every major business out there has purchased from their competitors when supplies get too tight.

Also, if you want to appear as a true resource of information, listing competitive sites might do more to attract larger volumes of users than if you tried going it alone (ex. an equestrian site listing all other horse-related sites).

On a closing note, wouldn’t you rather have your competitor like and respect you than feel threatened or antagonistic towards you? If they feel positively about you and ever get in a rut themselves, who are they more likely to call? Let it be you.
