Ever seen a trending topic on Twitter but have no idea what it means, or why people are talking about it?  Twitter just unveiled a helpful new feature: trending topic explanations.

When users click on a trending topic, they will now see a brief explanation about what the trending topic means, or why it’s popular.

For example, if you were to click on “#musicmonday” today, you would see this message appearing above the list of relevant tweets:

One of the ironic things about trending topics has always been that topics tend to trend more because people often have to use the topic’s keywords in their tweets to find out more information about it, thus perpetuating the trend.  Hopefully this will help cut down on some of the noise!
