Microsoft not only released its newly updated MSN Search this morning but allowed for public preview of its advanced search technology, as well.
Boasting a cleaner, simpler look, MSN Search (http://search.msn.com) also employs a pull-down menu in its search box. Users can decide whether to query the Web, news, Encarta Encyclopedia, shopping sources, etc. Moreover, visitors will be able to more easily distinguish between organic search results and sponsored results, comparable to Google.
“With this significant upgrade to MSN Search, we are delighted to now offer what we believe is the best search service available for the 350 million MSN customers,” stated Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN. “This massive investment kicks off a wave of innovation from MSN that will move search beyond its current, limited offering to delivering the next-generation search experience.”
And in this next generation MSN plans to launch its new algorithmic search engine solely using Microsoft technology. The current search implements Yahoo search technology. Although due out in late 2004, users can check it out in its beta form at http://techpreview.search.msn.com.
Microsoft’s new search engine currently has about 1 billion pages indexed and will surely increase over time. This number is certainly smaller than that of other search engines.
“We’re smaller than the rest of the indexes for the moment, so I think you’ll see that on some queries, we’ll do a decent job. On some we won’t, because we don’t even have the documents,” Mehdi said.
Visitors to the site can post any feedback they wish. In time, MSN’s new search technology is sure to make improvements.
