This week’s tip is a compact collection of important and helpful statistics for both Internet marketeers and those of you looking for fodder for new sales pitches.

This smattering is all across the board, and of course, there’s more where this came from if you truly want more….

WEB USAGE:

* Global Web Population in 1998: 142 million; in 1999: 196 million; by 2003: 502 million (1)

* In the average 29 minutes users spend online per session, they visit an average of 3 sites (9)

* Americans account for 44% of the current Web population; by 2003, there will be 177 million Americans online (1)

* Europe’s evolving Web share: in 1998, Europe accounted for 11% of Web commerce; by 2003, it will be 33% (1)

* Online business-to-business sales have already surpassed business-to-consumer sales, generating close to $100 billion in sales in 1999 (as compared to about $22 billion in the business-to-consumer market) (10); by 2003, that figure is predicted to exceed $1.3 billion (11)

* When purchasing online, the most important factor is price (47% of survey respondents) (8)

* Two fastest-growing segments of Net population are kids and teens (2)

SITE CREATION & MARKETING

* The average e-commerce site costs $1 million to produce and takes 5 months to develop (3)

* The biggest expense for e-commerce firms and portals is MARKETING, devouring between 60-65% of revenues. (4)

* 40% of Web surfers surveyed remembered seeing a specific banner ad (5), but banner click-thru rates now average 0.5%.

* Of ALL search engine referrals, Yahoo provides 44%, while Alta Vista, in 2nd place provides only 10% (6)

* 70% of global Web traffic goes to fewer than 4,500 sites (7)
