Google Testing Geographic Search

Google has far proven itself as one of the top, if not the leading search engine in relevance and popularity. Google has just announced a planned addition to its current search options of web sites, directories, news, and images- Geographic Search.

On Monday, Google released an experiment on Google Labs, a pre-launch beta testing site, called Google Search by Location which enables users to find information by geographic location.

For example, someone searching for a sushi restaurant in a specific neighborhood can search for the word [sushi] and by entering a zip code or the name of their desired location, will be shown results for local sushi restaurants. Results are accompanied by an easy-to-read map highlighting the locations of top results. Clicking on highlighted locations connects users to the local web page they’re looking for.
The technology behind Google Search by Location is one of the first of its kind and is an exciting new direction for Google users seeking local information. For this experiment, Google has done something new by analyzing the entire content of a page to extract hints or what Google calls “signals,” about the geographic nature of a page.

Google says “its goal is to connect users to the information they need whether it’s half-way around the world or just around the corner.”

The pre-launch “Google Search by Location” can be tested at http://labs.google.com/location
