Google has just slipped into the friends/buddies/dating/social networking world by releasing a new service service- orkut, named after Orkut Buyukkokten, a Google software engineer who developed the project during free personal time allowed to him by Google.

Google allows their employees to spend 20% of their time working on personal projects- Google says that this encourages creativity. That’s a very decent work policy that also corners the market on informational ownership- go Google! Buyukkokten had an interest in social networking and it led him to create this namesake (and if you think orkut is a strange name, well… so was Google 4 years ago).

The stealth-esque launch of orkut comes after the rumors that Google wanted to buy social networking service Friendster. There have been many rumors lately about Google launching their own free email service with email advertising. Add that to Google Groups, Google News, Google’s Froogle shopping search engine, and now orkut and, well…. you got yourself a decentralized portal.
