Basically, Google Authorship is a new feature of Google+ (Google’s social network) that enables you to associate the online content you create–blogs, articles, white papers, etc.–with your Google+ profile. By linking your published content with your Google+ profile, you establish “authorship” which makes your content more valuable to Google and therefore more visible in Google’s search results.
The difference between a search result that displays Google Authorship and a regular search result is plain to see. Here’s an example of this type of result for an article written by our CEO:
As you can see, Google Authorship is associating an article that Hollis Thomases wrote for ClickZ with Hollis’s personal Google+ profile, and pulls in her headshot and Google+ information into the search result itself. A Google Authorship search result provides more helpful at-a-glance information to the searcher which establishes more trust and compels the user to click, ultimately leading to a higher click-through rate for these types of results.
How Does Google Authorship Work?
Google Authorship uses your digital identity (Google Plus profile) and your digital signature (where you digitally sign your name) to establish your link as the content author. Any content you publish with your digital signature will then become associated with your identity, and vice versa. As you build your online presence and extend your Google Plus network, your online reputation (sometimes coined as “AuthorRank”) will increase. This can have a positive influence on the content you publish, thus increasing your content’s rank in Google search results.
