(Baltimore, MD) Web Ad.vantage, Inc., an Internet marketing and promotions agency, touched on a nerve with its recent feature on Internet marketing entitled, “Building an Internet Presence Starts from Within Company.” The commentary, which was published both online and off-line (Baltimore Business Journal, November 5, 1999; inBaltimore.com, 8/11/99) provides advice for businesses on how to best educate their own staff in order facilitate their Internet visibility. The column included suggestions such as a testing your staff with a simple Internet knowledge quiz and selling your sales and customer service management on your web site’s benefits. Judging from the number of responses Web Ad.vantage received from its article, there is an distinct need for businesses to address this issue.

Building a strong conviction in the power of the Internet is one of the first steps a company can take to promote its web site. Current statistics estimate that there are nearly 4 million web sites with that figure doubling approximately every few months, and Alexa Internet reports that 70% of global Web traffic goes to fewer than 4,500 sites. It is no longer possible to assume that a web site will be found easily or even be included in a search engine, and many businesses are discouraged by the unsuccessful amount of visitors to their site. Internet marketing focuses on building web site traffic and visibility through online and off-line actions.
